Documentation of a historic monument in the Roman Forum, Athens.
The west Propylon (Gate) of the Forum, was constructed in 11 BC. It was the final piece of a complex of commercial purpose, consisting of an open-air courtyard surrounded by multiple buildings. The monumental entrance has four Doric columns and a socle made of Pentelic marble and used to link the Roman Forum with the Ancient Greek Agora that did not sieze its function. Τhe gate was measured and drawed under the guidance of Professor Manolis Korres, the leading architect of the renovation program.
We used various techniques with our first priority in our every action being the respect towards the site. The tools varied from traditional ones, such as measuring differences in altitude with use of water, to more advanced such as leizer or orthophotography. During the months we spent on the site, we familiarised ourself with the monument, its techniques and its materials, so that we also started posing hypothesis about how various damages were inflicted to it throughout the years. We also discovered small alienations in some parallels of the plan which still have left us wondering if they were imperfections in the construction or deliberate actions.
